About James

James is a contemporary artist based in Harrogate, in the North of England.

He works in a range of media, but focuses mainly on brightly coloured acrylic paints, marker and spray paint. His work as a graphic designer and illustrator informs his bold graphic style as well as the counter-consumerist themes his work refers to. The religiosity of modern consumer-culture (including within fine art)  and the absurdity of our inescapably materialist way of life are often core themes for James.

Born in Hong Kong in 1993 and living in the UK from the age of 3, James had a relatively normal upbringing in leafy Harrogate. After school, he pursued Art and design at Harrogate college, followed by a BA in Graphic Design at Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne. After his studies, he was offered a job in the corporate world where he worked for a year and which led him to vow never to wear a tie to work ever again. His time in the sterile environment of the corporate sales office would later form part of the basis of his practice, having allowed him to witness the ritualised consumerism that forms the back bone of modern life from inside its engine. James' light-hearted outlook and ever-present sense of humour made it impossible for him to take work in an office seriously: much to the irritation of some of his managers!

After his stint in the world of suits, ties and endless cold emails, James pursued and completed his Master's in Fine art at the BxNU institute at Northumbria University. This would allow him to form the basis of an ongoing practice that still thrives today.
