About James
I am a contemporary artist based in Harrogate, in the North of England.

I work in an ever-widening range of artistic media including gouache, pen & ink, acrylic paint, lino printing, digital media, found materials, sheep's wool, oil paint, photography and more.

My work also spans a wide array of subjects, but often comments on the absurdity of life in the 21st century and pokes fun at the contradictions that arise in an increasingly mechanised, technocratic society. The conflict between human nature and the modern world is a source of fascination which I explore through my art.

I often use humour to shine a light on the darker elements of consumerism and the less-palatable aspects of the 21st century experience, an approach I refer to as 'Sugar Coating'.

Born in Hong Kong in 1993 and living in the UK from the age of 3, I had a relatively normal upbringing in leafy Harrogate. After school, I pursued Art and Design at Harrogate College, followed by a BA in Graphic Design at Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne. After my studies, I was offered a job in the corporate world where I worked for a year and which led me to vow never to wear a tie to work ever again. My time in the stuffy environment of the corporate sales office would later form part of the basis of my practice, having allowed me to witness the ritualised consumerism that forms the backbone of modern life from inside its engine. My critical outlook and ever-present sense of humour made it impossible for me to take work in an office seriously.

After my stint in the world of suits, ties and cold emails, I pursued and completed a Master’s in Fine Art at the BxNU Institute at Northumbria University. This allowed me to form the basis of an ongoing practice.
